When is the last time that you replaced your toothbrush? Can’t remember? Well, you are likely to be long overdue.
Consider this. Your toothbrush is a tool that you use to clean your mouth every single day. When it is dirty or damaged – can it really do its job? You do not put your dirty clothes away in your dresser or closet with your fresh clothes, do you? No, because that would soil your clean clothes. The same is true for your mouth. If you are using a dirty toothbrush, you are putting a dirty object inside your mouth and expecting it to clean your teeth.
Replacing your toothbrush every 3-6 months is important, and if you visit your dentist regularly then this will keep you on schedule. However, what you do with your toothbrush between replacements is also important.
First, it is important to rinse your toothbrush well after each use. Your toothbrush was designed to loosen plaque from the teeth and to remove particles of food that are stuck between your teeth. If these are not rinsed off, you are allowing bacteria to breed and food particles to rot on your bristles for hours at a time.
Second, let your toothbrush air dry in an upright position. By being upright, your toothbrush will dry faster, which helps to extinguish any lingering bacteria.
Third, store your toothbrush away from the toilet! Every time you flush, there is overspray that is released into the air. In fact, germs and bacteria from your toilet can travel up to six feet in the air. Don’t let your toothbrush be in this zone.
Fourth, replace your toothbrush after you have been sick. Germs from a cold, the flu, strep throat and a stomach virus can linger for up to 10 days. Get a new toothbrush once your illness is gone to prevent re-infecting yourself.
Finally, visit your dentist on a regular basis for a thorough cleaning and a new toothbrush. At Dream Dentist, we want to partner with you in every aspect of your oral health. Call today to schedule an appointment.
