As a parent there are so many things to keep track of to make sure your children stay healthy: did you get their vaccinations? Should you give them vaccinations? What about their regular checkups? Are they learning their colors? Their ABC’s? Are they able to differentiate between a square and a triangle?
But, have you given that much thought to their teeth and family dental care?
Early Prevention
The first thing to do is get your child’s teeth checked when they break through, or at a year old. Getting your little one used to visiting the dentist and thinking about them as a friend is crucial to establishing dental health and familiarity with the dental care experience. We’ll also make sure that those tiny teeth are clean and healthy.
Early Protection
After a few years, when the molars (back teeth) come in, you should ask your Dream Dentist about protecting them from cavities. Sealants can be placed on adult molars as soon as they start to come in, which is around age 6 and 12.
Healthy Habits
Work on establishing good habits as soon as teeth show up. Start by wiping gums and the initial teeth clean with a damp washcloth or finger toothbrush. Graduate to a children’s toothbrush and toothpaste, brushing twice a day. Once the teeth begin touching, start flossing. Every six months, bring your child to the dentist for a check-up, and cleaning.
At the Dream Dentist, we want to help your child have a healthy mouth and great dental habits. Early, positive experiences also reduce the risk for dental phobia later on. Make your child’s appointment at our O’Fallon office today; we’re here to serve your whole family, so you can schedule your own appointment while you’re at it!
